The Beginning of Cerberus Black Russian Terriers

My husband Josh and I were first introduced to the breed in October, 2000 while attending the French National Terrier Show. We were so impressed by the intelligence of the Black Russian Terriers (Tchornys) being exhibited there that we knew we needed to further our search for more information about this exciting new breed.

We spent about three years researching the breed on the internet. We were fortunate enough to come in contact with the breed at some local dog shows and at the "Meet the Breed" booth at the 2002 Eukanuba Classics. All the breeders and owners we met were very kind to us and it was very apparent that they were all wild about the breed. One owner/exhibiter named Dave Scheiris was kind enough to give us referrals to breeders from whom we could possibly purchase our first Black Russian Terrier. It was the intelligence and lovely temperaments of the Black Russian Terriers we had been introduced to, as well as the help and kindness we received from their owners, that helped us reach our decision that the breed was indeed the right one for us.

We obtained our first show puppy in the spring of 2003. We had been referred by Dave Scheiris to a wonderful lady named Zaira Moskalenko, breeder of Best Guard Black Russian Terriers. She invited us to come to St. Petersburg, Russia, to pick out our prospective show puppy. Zaira was the epitome of what a mentor should be. She arranged for us to attend dog shows to watch the breed and invited us to protection demonstrations. She also spent hours teaching us grooming techniques as well as introducing us to many Black Russian Terrier owners and their dogs. We will never forget her or her kindness.

Needless to say, we had a wonderful time while in St. Petersburg. It is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world. Not only did we get to bring our beautiful puppy, Stepan Razin, home. We also got to explore many of St. Petersburg's treasures.

We began to show Stepan in late 2003 at International All Breed Kennel Club shows where he was awarded his Junior Championship title. Zaira sent us a show female, Tara, in late 2003.

After the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) on July 1, 2004, we began to show Stepan and Tara at AKC shows. As of August 2005, Stepan was among the top 3 Black Russians in the country. He was invited to the 2004 Eukanuba Classics and obtained his American Championship in May 2005. He is regularly placing in the All Breed Show Working Group. Tara obtained her AKC Championship in June 2005. Our goals for 2005 include: working on championships for Tara and Stepan's get and working toward extablishing ourselves as respected breeders of Black Russian Terriers. We are both current members of the AABRT - American Association of Black Russian Terriers, Inc. and BRTCA - Black Russian Terrier Club of America, Inc.
